All You Need to Know About Move-out
Residence Halls close on May 13th, 2026
When checking out of the residence halls, residents must complete the following. Failure to complete any of the following steps may result in an additional charge. A sample list of charges may be found in Damage Charges Spreadsheet. Housing and Residence Life updates the list of damage charges each May and as such, there may be some variation to the amounts listed in the sheet depending upon the severity of damage caused by residents. From May 6 to May 13, Housing & Residence Life student staff will be available to assist residents with checkout.
Residence Hall closure for Spring 2026 Semester
Housing and Residence Life does not offer an extended stay application process for end of the year move out.
Residents who will not be living in intern housing or have an assignment for an approved summer session (Full Session, Session, A, D, or E) will need to move out by 5:00pm on May 13. Students who are graduating should review the Graduating Resident Move-Out schedule for their move out day and time.
Are you graduating in Spring 2026?
Residents who have applied for graduation for either Spring 2026 or Summer 2026 will be eligible to remain in the residence halls until after their degree celebration. Be sure to check the Graduating Resident Move Out Schedule to know when you will need to check out of the residence halls.
Students who are assisting with graduating (Eagle Bank Arena student staff, Green Machine, etc.) will need to have their supervisors reach out to housing@gmu.edu to request an extension.
Steps for a Successful Check-out
All students who have not been approved for an extended stay will need to complete the move-out process within 24 hours of their last final or by May 13th at 5:00 pm. Residents who have an afternoon exam on May 13th will still need to complete the move-out process by 9:00 am on May 14th. For Spring 2026, we are only able to offer an extended stay to graduating seniors, those assisting with commencement exercises, and residents with a summer housing assignment beginning in May. Residents who have a makeup exam after Noon on May 13th will need to send a copy of their syllabus or e-mail communication to housing@gmu.edu by May 5 to be granted an extended stay until 9:00 am on May 14. Manage Your Mailbox
If you are graduating, studying abroad, or moving off campus next fall, submit the mailbox closing request form. Upon approval, all mail to your existing mailbox will be forwarded to your alternate address for 90 days after the mailbox has been closed.
Meal Plan Access Dates
Use all your meal swipes and dining funds, as they do not roll over once the spring semester ends. Unused dining dollars & meal swipes will be zeroed out and are not refundable after this date. Swipe access ends: Wednesday, May 13 (end of business). Dining Dollar access ends: Saturday, May 16 (end of business).

Move-out Parking Pass
Download the move-out parking pass if you or your guest don't have a parking permit. The pass allows for 2-hour parking at Rappahannock Parking Deck levels 1&2, Lot I, Lot R, Townhouses, or Krasnow Lot on the Fairfax campus. Beacon Hall residents can utilize the Beacon Hall parking lot to load their belongings.

Patriot Pack Out Info
Patriot Packout (PPO) is George Mason University's annual move-out donation initiative will be returning for 2026. It aims to reduce waste by collecting gently used items from students during move-out and redistributing them to the Mason community and local organizations. Students can volunteer to assist with collecting, organizing, and transporting donations. This is a great way to support the Mason community and contribute to sustainability efforts.

Move-Out 2026 FAQs
Will green bins be available?
Yes! Residents will be able to pick up a green bin from the Eisenhower and Piedmont desks. Residents should not wait and move out their belongings last minute, as there may be a wait for green bins closer to when the halls close on May 14. It's best to plan your day to avoid the rush. If you check out a moving bin, ensure that you return it within the allotted timeframe.
I am staying on campus for the summer. Can I just move to my summer space?
It depends. Residents who are in housing for Summer Session 1 (full summer), A, D, or E, are eligible for extended stay at $60/night and will be able to move into their summer space shortly after the residence halls close. Residents who fit this category will receive additional instructions regarding the move to their summer space.
Residents who are in intern housing will receive information regarding extended stay options.
When can I begin moving my items out?
Begin moving items to your established summer storage / housing accommodations (if not on campus) throughout the Spring semester.
When is the best time to move out my belongings?
It is best to move out your belongings early in the morning or at late afternoon hours to avoid peak times.
Where am I allowed to park during move-out?
Avoid parking in the fire lanes, roadways, grass, or other non-parking areas, where vehicles may be towed. It is best to check your parking allocations before your unload your belongings.
